Boat Regatta (Cultural Festival): Scheduled for December 19th, this event will bring together fisherwomen from the eight target communities, their families, local stakeholders (cooperative society leaders, local government representatives, Lagos State agencies), plus invited cultural performers. The regatta will feature locally-built boats that Enatta Foundation has helped supply, races, swimming, traditional songs/dances, a health programme and recognition awards for fisherwomen who have excelled in productivity and cooperative participation (for example those who have judiciously made savings following the Money Mata Programme, Enatta Foundation’s financial literacy programme for fisherwomen). The festival will serve as a public celebration of the fisherwoman, raise community pride, provide networking among fisherwomen, and draw media/public attention to the fishing sector in Lagos.
Children’s Christmas Party: This event is slated for December 20th, the day after the regatta, and targets the children from around the Amuwo-Odofin neighbourhood. We will host a community-accessible party with games, festive food, gifts of school supplies/educational kits and toys, and children-friendly participatory activities. The aim is to give these children a joyful festive experience, show love, build hopeful aspirations and strengthen community bonds across the neighbourhood.
Food Parcel Distribution:The 19th, 20th and 21st of December will be dedicated to street-drive style distribution of food parcels to three groups: Fisherwomen Folks in Somolu Local Government Area; Low-Income Families in Amuwo Odofin; and Underprivileged and Low-Income Groups in Tejuosho Market, Yaba. Each parcel will comprise staple items (rice, beans, cooking oil, beverages, spaghetti, garri, salt, sugar, etc.) distributed to groups of individuals and families in these communities as a means to share the joy of the festive season. Again, our aim is to share happiness in small packages and to tie in to the broader empowerment narrative.
