Equip the Fisherwoman Project ( EFP)

The Equip the Fisherwoman Project (EFP) is an ambitious initiative by the Enatta Foundation aimed at empowering artisanal fisherwomen in Lagos by providing them with the essential tools needed to sustain and grow their trade. Fishing communities in Lagos face numerous challenges, from outdated equipment to inadequate storage and processing facilities, limiting their productivity and profitability. The EFP seeks to bridge this gap by equipping fisherwomen with modern boats, fishing nets, eco-friendly storage facilities, fish drying machines, and prawn catchers, ensuring they can compete effectively in the seafood industry.

Since its launch, the project has made significant strides but still faces hurdles in achieving its full impact. So far, only eight communities have received 16 boats—two per community—despite the initial projection of 30 boats per community. While this has led to noticeable improvements in fish catch and income levels for the beneficiaries, the project is far from meeting its intended target. Additionally, no community has yet received fishing nets, eco-friendly fish drying machines, prawn catchers, or cold storage equipment, which are crucial for reducing post-harvest losses and improving fish quality for wider market reach.

The lack of proper storage remains one of the biggest setbacks for fisherwomen, forcing them to sell their catch at lower prices due to spoilage. Eco-friendly freezers and cold rooms would enable them to store fish longer, negotiate better prices, and access larger markets. Similarly, prawn catchers and fish drying machines would introduce more sustainable fishing and processing methods, increasing their productivity while reducing waste. Without these critical tools, fisherwomen remain trapped in a cycle of low yields, unstable income, and financial vulnerability.

The EFP is not just about distributing fishing equipment; it’s about creating a sustainable economic framework for women in the sector. By fully implementing this project, Enatta Foundation aims to strengthen the seafood value chain, improve financial independence for fisherwomen, and promote environmentally sustainable fishing practices. However, additional funding and partnerships are needed to scale the initiative, ensuring that every targeted community receives the full range of support necessary for long-term success.

As Enatta continues to push for the expansion of the Equip the Fisherwoman Project, the vision remains clear: a thriving network of empowered fisherwomen, equipped with modern tools, integrated into the economy, and positioned as key stakeholders in Lagos' fishing industry. The foundation calls on stakeholders, policymakers, and impact-driven investors to join in making this vision a reality—because when fisherwomen thrive, entire communities rise with them.
