Empowering Coastal Communities with Alternative Livelihoods

The Skill Up the Creek program is an initiative by Enatta Foundation designed to equip and empower women in Lagos’ coastal communities with alternative skills beyond fishing. Recognizing the seasonal nature of fishing, this program provides economic alternatives that ensure financial stability even during the off-season.

The program focuses on training women in:

  • Fishing Net Weaving – Enabling them to produce and sell high-quality fishing nets to local and international markets.

  • Basket Weaving – Teaching them to create handcrafted baskets for fish storage, household use, and commercial sales.

  • Advanced Boat Making – Providing skills in boat construction and repair, creating employment opportunities within their communities.

  • Upholstery – Introducing them to the craft of repairing and designing boat interiors and household furniture.

By diversifying their skills, Skill Up the Creek helps fisherwomen become self-reliant, fostering economic growth, job creation, and social inclusion. This program not only reduces financial vulnerability but also strengthens the communities’ resilience, ensuring they thrive beyond fishing seasons.
