The Water Hyacinth Management Program by Enatta Foundation is an innovative initiative aimed at tackling the growing menace of water hyacinth overgrowth in Nigerian waterways, while simultaneously providing alternative income streams and sustainable environmental solutions for coastal communities.
The program will focus on training women in coastal communities on how to convert water hyacinth into useful materials, creating new opportunities for economic empowerment.
The skills to be taught include:
Basket Weaving – Women will learn to use water hyacinth fibers to craft beautiful and durable baskets, which can be sold locally and internationally.
Paper Pulp Production – Water hyacinth will be transformed into pulp for paper production, creating new markets for eco-friendly paper goods.
In parallel, the program will launch a separate initiative focused on converting water hyacinth into fuel. This component of the project will involve setting up small-scale facilities to process water hyacinth into biomass fuel, providing an affordable and renewable energy source for the communities. This will not only reduce the impact of water hyacinth on fishing and transportation but also help address energy poverty in coastal areas.
Starting in November 2025, this initiative will create a ripple effect: improving the environment, providing new livelihoods, and reducing the economic vulnerability of the communities while also addressing the growing challenge of water hyacinth.
